COVID-19 infections are rising exponentially. Real-time geospatial and hyperlocal situational awareness is needed now to facilitate the community level action that is critical to a resilient pandemic response.

What do we need (at massive scale) to contain COVID-19?

  • keep uninfected people healthy in the community

  • keep infected people from getting worse and spreading it, track down their contacts

  • have clear awareness of the current situation and resources to plan responses

  • learn from past cases and responses to advance the next solution

Each of these needs cannot be solved separately, but require an organized effort. Today's best practices and actions to address the growing situation live in silos - failing to connect vital elements and ignoring an untapped resource of connected and willing global citizens. Relying on aggregated statistics generated by the disconnected healthcare systems and anemic government interventions is simply too reactionary to truly keep us safe. The only way success can be achieved is by integrating citizen and establishment action in a sustained amd cohesive manner. People power.

We are developing a crowd-source/crowd-force platform that gives every citizen (expert professional and everyone else) the power to help fight COVID-19. Anyone can share their COVID case, report and compare their illness that might be COVID to others, or they can share their travel history and sick contacts. Everyone can help keep themselves safe, reach potential sick contacts and help stop the spread of the virus as a collective. Those in need can post critical problems, others can let the community know they have essential resources. We can match these and predict future needs. Keeping the virus in check is not possible by just the actions of the clinical system, but is only possible by the effort of everyone. This won’t be the last time we face a crisis like this. We need to respond now and build a shared space to work together on this disaster and the next.

  • Symptom Tracking and case matching blended with Geospatial Prevalence Data

  • Contact Tracing to build a network that connects everyone and let’s them solve the problem at the last mile.

  • Natural language processing and social signal processing to organize and surface the most relevant and pressing information from social feeds, news and posts.

  • Privacy preserving sharing, visualization and data science methods that create engagement and learning while maintaining a respectful and safe environment for all users.

  • Matching New cases to known histories, patients to clinical trials, problems to solutions and

Listening to everyone

What can each person contribute to stopping this pandemic?

  • People diagnosed with COVID-19 can report their case, provide information about how they were diagnosed, their symptoms and places they’ve been. Infected patients can use the system to alert those who they’ve come in contact with so they can be a part of the solution rather than sick at home.

  • People who are sick can report their case and see how it matches with those with other known COVID-19 cases around them. Everyone who is sick, diagnosed with COVID-19 or not, can journal their symptoms, helping track who is still infectious and who might need to go to the hospital.

  • People who are not sick can actively engage by being up-to-date on the latest best practice, be informed of their risk factors, and be alerted when their risk profile shifts.

  • Healthcare providers and frontline workers can share the problems they are facing as the situation changes, reaching for help on a range of subjects including emerging clinical questions, personal protective equipment shortages and medical equipment needs.

  • Businesses, experts and individuals with resources, assets or skills can report what they can contribute and find matching needs uncovered at the front line.

  • Social & Semantic Data Incoming feeds from structures and social data, living repositories and rapid response networks.

How does OASIS leverage the collective intelligence and power of every human?

On a Living Map

Maps create an inherent geospatial awareness that is difficult to provide by any other medium. Although the overall problem permeates through every corner of the world, many issues are inherently localized. A hospital that needs supplies will best benefit from resources that can come locally. Knowledge that there is a coming surge of cases in a very specific region can help systems prepare. Individual citizens, who may not know how to help to keep their family or neighbors safe, now have a clear visual of how to help. Send the app to their friends and family they’ve been in contact with and encourage them to help fill out the map. No matter if you are sick, diagnosed with COVID-19, just have allergies, or aren’t sick, you have a way to put that on the map. The visual representation gives a direct awareness of the state of your local neighborhood in terms of health and resources available.

… with Growing Intelligence

All this data is aggregated with vetted information layers for known COVID cases, local best practices, news and alerts.

Help us build OASIS

Created by a team of clinicians, engineers, designers, and privacy experts at UCSD, our collective platform gives everyone a chance to contribute and put their contribution on a living map. Like google maps for our lives, OASIS helps everyone find their way through COVID-19 and coming disasters. This platform goes far beyond this disaster and can be used to make better and and smarter decisions for government policies, healthcare response, and individuals.

Right now we are in a sprint to respond to COVID-19. We need your help to build, get the word out, and support the effort. We’re all in this together.
